ChatGPT Vulnerable to Prompt Injection via YouTube Transcripts and ChatGPT Plugins Open Security Holes From PDFs, Websites and More — I’ve written multiple times about how especially open source AI with access to the open web are vulnerable to all kinds of attack vectors, with the difference to internet stuff being that they likely are mimetic AI-systems that hijack your theory of mind. Now available in PDFs and YT-transcripts.

More on the recent ai-supported advances in Neuroscience i wrote about here: AI Is Unlocking the Human Brain’s Secrets.
This is funny, but he also has a point: Please stop using AI to make Wes Anderson parodies. Can we please switch to Fritz Lang?
Related: The impecable Roland Meyer aka Bildoperationen on Twitter about “the Wesandersonification of everything“: “we are already living in an Anderson-saturated visual environment. And since AI's greatest strengths lie in amplifying visual clichés, it seems that AI Anderson is often even more Andersonian than the real one: more symmetrical, more pastel, and even more nostalgic“.
As a lifelong Beatles fan, this AI-generated Beatles music is blowing my mind — There have been some pretty good Paul McCartney-deepfakes recently with some being particularly clever using the voice of young Beatles-McCartney on top of new songs, de-aging his voice. Those deepfakes unfortunately vanished due to copyright claims so i didn’t mention them here but as with all things digital these days, some Beatles lyrics hold up pretty well these days:
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to

A lawyer is in hot water due to submitting ChatGPT-generated filings to the court in which “Six of the submitted cases appear to be bogus judicial decisions with bogus quotes and bogus internal citations“. Saul Goodman absolutely upped his game with AI-tech, i guess.
The “AI will not replace jobs“-meme is going great: Eating Disorder Helpline Fires Staff, Transitions to Chatbot After Unionization. I expect similar moves in sectors especially prone for vultures, like the gaming industry and online media. What do you think will happen when game designers unionize due to pressure on the job market by generative AI?

Last week, Adobe introduced Generative Fill, which is basically their old Content Aware Fill-functionality enhanced with their image synthesis engine Firefly. Here’s a promo clip on YT.
over at hates it because it can’t generate Shrek, but this is on purpose as this is a tool for professionals, and Adobe are very, very concerned with copyright, which is why i believe that, at least for the creative market for actual professionals, Adobe might eat the lunch of Midjourney or Stable Diffusion in the long run, just as licensed streaming ate the lunch of piracy and torrents, as i’ve written when they first announced it.
And actually, the results of Photoshops generative fill are pretty good, here’s two threads by some of those annoying Twitterthread-bros which have an overview on what’s the tech is capable of, and here’s a reddit-post with some results. The latest experiments by Roope Rainisto, still my favorite Image Synthesis-wizard these days:

Voyager: An Open-Ended Embodied Agent with Large Language Models playing Minecraft: “Voyager shows strong in-context lifelong learning capability and exhibits exceptional proficiency in playing Minecraft. It obtains 3.3x more unique items, travels 2.3x longer distances, and unlocks key tech tree milestones up to 15.3x faster than prior SOTA. Voyager is able to utilize the learned skill library in a new Minecraft world to solve novel tasks from scratch, while other techniques struggle to generalize“.
In the first link above, i’ve already mentioned “mimetic AI-systems that hijack your theory of mind“, where you just can’t help ascribing a personality to it. Now I’ve learned that in context of AI, there is a related term called the Barnum Effect, where you psychologically just can’t help and “give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically to them, yet which are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people“. In other words, when ChatGPT generates bland, shallow stuff, at least sometimes, you can’t help but think that this stuff is about you as a person.
I keep saying this but i want to hammer home this point: I think AI-doomerism is way overblown, while we totally underestimate the psychological effects of stochastic libraries that speak to us and to which we can’t help but prescribe a personality in a synthetic theory of mind, and i do think this is especially critical with highly customizable open source systems. The Dadabots talk to Jake Abel on The Future of Music-Podcast. These guys produce AI-music for years now and i first blogged about their 2017 ai-generated metal album Coditany of Timeness. If anyone knows what’s up, it’s them.
Girlfriend GPT is a Python project to build your own AI girlfriend using ChatGPT4.0. It also sings Radioheads “I’m a creep“ on a constant loop 24/7.
There was a recent hubub when german teachers caught pupils during final exams for higher schools using ChatGPT, not just because they cheated, but also because in some cases, you can’t really prove that they were cheating at all and now everybody scratches their heads what to do.
Having said that: C.W. Howell “had [his] undergrad class use ChatGPT for a critical assignment [and] had them all generate an essay using a prompt [he] gave them, and then their job was to ‘grade’ it — look for hallucinated info and critique its analysis. All 63 essays had hallucinated information. Fake quotes, fake sources, or real sources misunderstood and mischaracterized. Every single assignment“.
The lesson here is: If you want a good exam, sit down and learn. And while we’re at it, here’s my standard response to digitalization of education: get all digital crap out of the classroom, make them write by hand and read books on paper.I don’t want to give orange man more space than he deserves, which would still just be a prison cell actually, but Trump Trolls DeSantis and Musk With a Hitler Deepfake. I hope for Biden to beat both of those pricks it will be enough just to be a normal human being.
Global heating will push billions outside ‘human climate niche’ — Here’s the paper. This is just academic jargon for saying: “Climate Change will produce billions of climate refugees“. You can imagine what will happen when Indians are pushed to the north to the borders of China and Pakistan. Gonna be… hot.
Big polluters’ share prices fall after climate lawsuits, study finds: “The researchers found consistently larger effects on corporate share prices after the Shell case was launched ‘suggesting capital markets are increasingly responding to climate litigation’“. — This gonna rise manifold once insurance corporations get the heat, which they are already aware of for a while.
Climate activists in germany recently got raided by the police for gluing themselves to concrete disrupting local traffic. Bavarian authorities think about declaring them organized crime, which is ridiculous to begin with. (For my international readers: Bavarian authorities are always a tad more conservative than the rest of us.) Now, the UN called for protection of climate activists, "because we need them now more than ever" and that protesters had been "instrumental at crucial moments in pushing governments and business leaders to do much more", while climate goals would already be out of reach without them.
The excellent german Verfassungsblog talks about the legality of civil disobedience in this context and in a post on the movie “How To Blow Up A Pipeline” i’ve already written about why i think that these kids are actually upholding and defending the law, when you take past court decisions against nation states into account. When courts repeatedly sentence whole nations for doing shit about climate, then these kids are on legal grounds, and bavarian authorities are just plain wrong.Scientists developed nanomaterial which can generate electricity from water molecules in the air and the technology becomes stable enough to imagine commercial application.
This is my other side of climate change thinking: Solar prices are already eating the lunch of everything else and especially China is investing heavily in clean energy. If we actually manage to “science the shit“ out of the problem, to quote a famous martian, things might not get as bad as activists like Extinction Rebellion are suggesting.Peter Singer writes about The Meat Paradox in The Atlantic. I’m thinking about meat on and off for years now, and on my old blog, i regularly posted about it, showing people elaborate documentaries about how the meat industry kills and disects and processes a cow, for instance.
See, I’m no vegetarian at all, and i love myself a big fat cheeseburger and i pity americans who can’t go to McD and just have a McRip. I do all of this while being perfectly aware of our treatment of animals and the holocaust we are inflicting on them. I strongly believe that animals are conscious, and the industrial scale suffering we are causing is just disgusting. That’s the meat paradox.
I think, future generations will look down on us as sheer barbarians, comparing us to Nazis for killing millions and millions of conscious beings for proteins we can very well produce by other means. If you take animal suffering into account, our societies are just brutish backwards neanderthals mindlessly killing sentient beings for flesh. And all of this is true even without the catastrophic impact of the meat industry on climate change.Genevieve Guenther in Noema Mag about the carbon footprint of the rich. Summary from Sarah Jaquette Ray on the tweeties: “In the past 30 years, the emissions of the poorest 50% have hardly grown. They were under 7% of global emissions in 1990, and they remain ~7% today. Meanwhile, the richest 10% -> 52% of emissions.“ — I hereby propose a solution of Peter Singers meat paradox: Eat the rich. It totally would reduce the carbon footprint of beef production, as the rich don't fart like cows because rich people have no guts anyways.

DJ Absolutely Shit: the unstoppable rise of cringe names in dance music — This is great and as formerly playing a few venues with under the cringy nickname DJ Acidwalta i can absolutely relate to this. It has some hilarious dry sentences that go like “My name is auto-blocked on Facebook’, DJ Fucks Himself reveals”. Also, this ”early rave flyer from the 90s”-illu that goes with the article:
Titanic: First ever full-sized scans reveal wreck as never seen before: “The new scan captures the wreck in its entirety, revealing a complete view of the Titanic. (…) Submersibles, remotely controlled by a team on board a specialist ship, spent more than 200 hours surveying the length and breadth of the wreck. They took more than 700,000 images from every angle, creating an exact 3D reconstruction.“

LEGO Icons reveals 10323 Pac-Man Arcade. I want this so hard.
The new Barbie-trailer looks even better than the last one, and the plastic icon talks about… death? I already was hooked by the surreal visuals of this flick, but this seems to be even a subversive take on consumerism. I also love their marketing claim: “If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.“
The trailer for the directional debut of Julio Torres and new A24 movie Problemista featuring Tilda Swinton, RZA, and Isabella Rossellini is just sweet, highly inventive, creative and sometimes outright bonkers. I love this.
